We are recruiting for two befriending roles!

Befrienders will provide weekly telephone/video calls (and in some cases in person-meetings) supporting women who are experiencing mental or emotional distress. Most will have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse; other presenting issues include childhood abuse, sexual violence, isolation, anxiety and depression, and parental challenges. Service users are female tenants of Sovereign Housing.

You will be matched to one woman and offer her two phone/video calls (of up to one hour each) per week, for six months – OR offer one weekly in person session for a year. You will provide emotional support, including non-judgmental active listening, as well as elements of an ‘ordinary’ friendship, such as having a chat and a laugh.

Our offices are based in Bristol but training and supervision take place remotely, so volunteers from across the country are welcome!

If having read the information below you are still interested in volunteering for us, and feel that you would be able to take on the commitment required, then please complete and return the application form AND the monitoring form (also below) and return by e-mail to: laura@womankindbristol.org.uk. Closing date: Tuesday 21st September 2021, 11.45am.

Please note there are only limited opportunities for women without weekday day-time availability; training is also likely to be run remotely during office hours.

The women we support may have faced difficulties such as childhood abuse, trauma, sexual and domestic abuse, and will be experiencing mental ill health and social isolation.

You would start by getting to know each other and getting out and about for a few hours once per week. As the relationship develops you will support and empower her to make changes and develop her confidence in doing everyday things such as getting the bus, joining a class, finding new hobbies, improving her routine, and having some fun!

We provide comprehensive training for this role through four half-day sessions over four weeks. The training covers a range of topics as well as supporting you to become a stronger ‘active listener’. There is also some reading homework to complete between the sessions.

If having read the information you are still interested in volunteering for us, and feel that you would be able to take on the commitment required, then please complete and return the application form AND the monitoring form (also below) and return by e-mail to: nicola@womankindbristol.org.uk. Closing date: Friday 1st October 2021, 2.30pm.

We welcome volunteers with lived experiences of mental health challenges. We do however require you to have had at least one year of stability, and ideally to have received professional help, such as counselling.
